Served in office 1900 – 1916
Sheriff Berthelot was elected during one of the quietest elections in St. John Parish, with very little opposition. Sheriff Berthelot held this position for the next 16 years until political disagreements beginning in 1912 became more pronounced. In 1912 the Democratic primary election was divided into two political factions, the Berthelot faction and the Hart Faction, headed by former Sheriff William Hart who again ran for Sheriff and ousted Sheriff Berthelot from office with a win in election of 1916.
