In celebration of National Read Across America, Sheriff Mike Tregre and several officers enjoyed reading and speaking to students at local elementary schools this week.
Sheriff Tregre read “Delilah’s Delightful Dream,” a story about respecting others and cooperation and teamwork, for elementary students at LaPlace Elementary and John L. Ory Magnet in LaPlace. He and other officers also read to students at St. Peter, Riverside Academy, Fifth Ward, Lake Pontchartrain, Garyville-Mt. Airy Magnet, Fifth Ward, and Emily C. Watkins.
Sheriff Tregre and all of the officers stressed to students that reading is essential to success in their life, and the more they read the more they will learn.
The SJSO also was excited to have an officer, Deputy Jose Portillo, read parts of a book in Spanish, teaching a class some words in Spanish.
Reading to students was a wonderful way to spend their morning, the officers said.
Joining Sheriff Tregre were Officers Anita Haley, Ann Taylor, Brandon Barlow, Carolina Pineda, Demond Memminger, Darlene Cooper, Mike Coburn, Kaiana Knight, Ben Teekell, Brandy Walker, David Samson, Devin Billiot, Jose Portillo, and Marshall Carmouche.
All the officers agreed reading to students was a great way to spend their morning.
