Sheriff's StarMichael Kerry Tregre was born and raised on East 29th Street in Reserve, La. He is a graduate of St. Peter Elementary School and East St. John High School Class of 1985. He married his wife Tanyia in 1990.

On February 1, 1988, Mike began his career with the St. John Sheriff’s Office as a jailor. In 1990, he moved on to patrolman and worked as an undercover narcotics officer. In February 1991, he was promoted to Detective and earned the rank of Sergeant.  On July 1, 1996, he was promoted to Lieutenant and became the department’s first ever Director of Internal Management, a position created to investigate complaints against officers and maintain public relations. Less than a year later he was given the additional duty of being Public Information Officer, which earned him the title of “spokesperson” for SJSO. On August 17, 1999, Mike was promoted to the rank of Captain.

In 2004, Mike applied to the highly recognized FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. After extensive background checks and numerous letters of recommendation, he was accepted to the 219th session that started in the fall of 2004. Mike completed the three-month curriculum of administrative class work, rigorous physical training and networking with some of the finest law enforcement officers in the world. He graduated from the 219th Session of the FBINA in December 2004.  He was promoted to the rank of Major on December 17, 2004.

In 2011 Mike was elected Sheriff of St. John Parish by 63% of the voters. He was sworn in on July 1, 2012, and re-elected in three subsequent elections. He began his fourth term as Sheriff and his 36th year in law enforcement on July 1, 2024.  During his tenure, Mike has brought to St. John a state-of-the-art law enforcement training center named in honor of former Sheriff Lloyd B. Johnson.  This facility has been used for training of St. John officers as well as officers from around the country.  In addition, it serves as a meeting place for community-based events.  He partnered with the St. John Parish government to create the first ever Westbank substation.  The substation houses some SJSO employees and serves as a meeting place for the Westbank community.
