A 2-year-old LaPlace girl suffered lacerations to the left side of her neck, face and chest after being bitten by her father’s pitbull on Monday, January 26, 2026. The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 2:57 p.m. regarding a dog biting a toddler.
When deputies arrived to the 300 block of Cottage Court in LaPlace, St. John Fire Department officials were on scene and addressing the young girl’s wounds. The deputy observed the child having trouble breathing and bleeding from her mouth.
The girl’s father told the deputy that he saw the child in the dining room eating popcorn and then she went to her bedroom. A few minutes later he said he heard the child screaming and went to the room. The father said he saw that the dog had bitten the child.
The father said he thinks the dog was able to get into the girl’s bedroom from the rear yard through the partition in the window air conditioning unit. He said he thinks his daughter may have removed the wood board that acted as a barrier on the side of the window AC.
The girl was transported to by Acadian Ambulance Services to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans where she was listed in stable condition.
The case has been turned over to the state’s Child Protective Services and St. John Parish Animal Control.
