St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff patrol Deputy Douglas Miller has been named Officer of the First Quarter for 2025. Deputy Miller was recognized for his “keen eye” and overall good police work in apprehending a burglary suspect.

St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre recognized Deputy Miller during a staff meeting at the Lloyd B. Johnson Training Center in LaPlace on Thursday, May 29, 2025. Kevin Marchese, owner of Kev’s Glass, was the sponsor of the Officer Of The First Quarter.

Deputy Miller will be one of four officers considered for the 2025 Officer of the Year award during a ceremony held annually in January.
Sheriff Tregre said Deputy Miller’s actions led to the arrest of an armed convicted felon wanted on an outstanding warrant and the prevention of a home burglary.

Deputy Miller responded to a call for service on April 8 about a suspicious person attempting to gain entry into several LaPlace homes. He canvassed the area and was able to locate the suspect who was attempting to access a home. Deputy Miller detained the subject, located a stolen handgun in his pocket, along with multiple burglary tools.

A criminal history check was done of the subject, and he was found to be a convicted felon, and had an additional outstanding warrant with SJSO, Sheriff Tregre said.

If not for Deputy Miller’s keen eye, and overall good police work, the subject could have succeeded in burglarizing a residence.
