St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre is in the beginning phase of his plan to construct a new Sheriff’s Office in LaPlace that will house the department’s administrative, investigative and records divisions.
The new building will also help centralize the department’s operational bases as the new Sheriff’s Office will be constructed near the parish jail and Patrol Headquarters, essentially creating a Public Safety Complex. The building will be funded fully through construction bonds that will be repaid from existing revenue sources.
The new construction will replace the current Sheriff’s Office located at 1801 W. Airline Highway that is housed in a 1960s era building. The building has served the department well, but has sustained heavy damage from Hurricanes Isaac, Ida and Francine.
“This is a much needed investment in public safety and security that will be beneficial to our community and my staff for the next 50 years,” Sheriff Tregre said. “We are currently meeting with our architectural design team, GHC Architects, to create a modern facility that is topnotch and capable of meeting the increased public safety demands placed on this department.”
The new construction will be a one-story building constructed on an 18-acre plot with the most up-to-date technology and infrastructures that will offer additional space and the capacity to support future expansions.
Sheriff Tregre expects to break ground in 2026.
“We are excited about this project and what it will mean for our officers and the residents of St. John Parish,” Sheriff Tregre said. “Our current building is more than 60 years old. We are looking forward to providing our community with this modern, updated facility.”
Further details, including the groundbreaking ceremony date and renderings of the building design, will be shared as they become available.
