The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a LaPlace man and booked him with attempted second degree murder among other charges following a domestic dispute on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in which he attempted to shoot his wife.

The gunfire missed the woman, but struck the wall of a neighboring apartment and a vehicle.

At approximately 6:17 a.m. St. John Parish Sheriff’s officers responded to a report of gunfire at 1525 West Airline Highway, the Hemlock Apartment Complex.  A caller advised that Larry Eugene, Jr., age 49, was on the top
floor balcony of the apartment building firing a weapon.

When deputies arrived at the apartment complex, they made contact with Eugene using the intercom system in their vehicle and requested that he come outside. After repeated requests, Eugene exited the apartment and laid on the ground. He was detained after briefly struggling with a deputy.

A verbal dispute between Eugene and his wife led to the altercation with a firearm. His wife ran from the apartment to call for help.

During an interview with investigators, Eugene confessed his intent was to kill his wife.
