Sheriff Mike Tregre warns residents of a text scam that has been circulating recently throughout St. John Parish. The text message reads:
“We came across a parcel from July pending to you. Kindly assume ownership and confirm for delivery here:”
The scam text uses various links. Don’t click on the link. Don’t reply either. Delete the text message.
Sheriff Tregre said if the link is clicked on, it may ask you for your personal information. Don’t give personal information. Clicking the link also could trigger malware that infects your phone and could collect information from your phone.
Sheriff Tregre advises residents to always delete unwanted text messages; don’t click on links in unwanted text messages; and to report spam texts to your carrier.
