On Friday, August 7, 2015, at 6:26 pm, St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Ochsner River Parish emergency room for the report of a domestic battery. The 18-year-old female victim told deputies that her boyfriend, D’Angelo Kelson, 17, of two years and father of her unborn child slapped her, shoved her to the ground, and kicked her in the back. After a physical examination, the unborn child appeared uninjured; however, the victim was transferred to a New Orleans area hospital for further observation.
Deputies went to the residence in the 500 block of Monticello Court in LaPlace where the couple lives to investigate the domestic complaint. When deputies arrived at the residence to talk to Kelson, deputies could smell the odor of marijuana at the front door. When Kelson opened the door and saw the deputies, he closed the door abruptly. Deputies pursued Kelson in the residence and arrested him for domestic battery. Kelson told deputies that he and his girlfriend were arguing, and he accidentally slapped her in the face. He said that he pushed her only to get her out of his face not realizing that he used such force to cause her to fall to the ground. He denied kicking her.
When deputies were searching Kelson prior to being transported for booking, deputies asked him if he had any marijuana in his possession. Before Kelson could respond, his mother, Jeanette Kelson, 38, interrupted and said that she had smoked some weed earlier. D’Angelo Kelson was transported for booking.
Based on the intense odor of marijuana in the residence and the statement made by Jeanette Kelson, deputies obtained a judicial court authorized search warrant for the residence. Upon search of the residence, deputies recovered approximately $3,000 worth of marijuana, drug paraphernalia used in the distribution of marijuana, a handgun, and ammunition for the handgun. A computer check on the handgun revealed that the handgun was reported stolen from Jefferson Parish.
Deputies arrested Jeanette Kelson and booked her with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, illegal carrying of a firearm with a controlled dangerous substance, and resisting a deputy. She bonded out of jail Sunday on a $28,000 bond.
Deputies booked D’Angelo Kelson with domestic abuse battery, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, and illegal carrying of a firearm with a controlled dangerous substance.
On Wednesday, August 5, D’Angelo Kelson reported to authorities that he was the victim of an armed robbery and shot in his left hand.
On Saturday, August 8, just after midnight, deputies responded to the Kelson’s Monticello Court address for the report of gunshots heard and the front glass door shattered. Deputies identified a female at the residence as Patricia Kelson, 22. She told deputies that she and her three children, ages three, five, and six years old, were in the house when shots were fired. No one was injured. Deputies arrested Patricia Kelson and booked her on five outstanding attachments for contempt of court. She bonded out of jail Monday on a $950 bond.
On Saturday, August 8, at 6:55 pm, deputies responded to the Kelson’s Monticello Court address for the report of a burglary of the residence. A friend of Jeanette Kelson told deputies that Kelson asked her to check on the house while she was in jail. She told deputies that when she checked the house at 3:15 pm, the house appeared normal. When she checked the house at 6:55 pm, she noticed a window open and more than one prescription bottle was missing from the living room coffee table.
On Sunday, August 9, at 8:55 am, deputies responded to the Kelson’s Monticello Court address for the report of a burglary of the residence. The complainant reported that she arrived at the house and noticed the front door ajar. She reported that four televisions were stolen from the residence.
The incidents involving the Kelson family are very concerning and are being actively investigated. Without the full cooperation of the victims, investigators seek information from the public.
