Captain Brian Schum of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office has graduated as a member of the 298th session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy (FBINA) in Quantico, VA. Capt. Schum is commander of the St. John Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division and has been employed at the SJSO for more than 15 years.
“The FBI National Academy provided me with world-class training and invaluable experiences that will directly benefit the citizens of St. John Parish through stronger leadership, innovative policing strategies, and a continued commitment to public service,” Capt. Schum said.
Capt. Schum graduated the FBI Academy on June 18 and now joins an elite group of law enforcement officials who have completed the highly selective training program. Less than one percent of law enforcement officers are chosen—by invitation only—to participate in the intensive 10-week program that provides advanced training in communication, leadership and fitness. Instruction is provided by FBI Academy faculty, Special Agents and internationally recognized experts in the field.
Capt. Schum was one of 255 attendees representing 49 states, the District of Columbia, 22 international law enforcement agencies, five military organizations and four federal civilian organizations.
During his time at the academy, Capt. Schum also completed the infamous “Yellow Brick Road” fitness challenge. The 6.1-point mile trek through woods, creeks, hilly terrain, and over obstacles, was designed by U.S. Marines. Students who complete this fitness challenge receive an actual yellow brick to commemorate their achievement!
The FBI Academy, started in 1935, is attended by leaders of state, local, federal and international law enforcement agencies. Participants are selected through a nomination process conducted by their respective agency.
Other current officers at SJSO who have graduated from the FBI National Academy are Sheriff Mike Tregre, Major Greg Baker, Major Chip Wale, Major Brandon Barlow, Captain Carolina Pineda, Captain Lisa Dorris and Capt. Scott Lacy.
