Three Baton Rouge teenagers were arrested Saturday night (Nov. 9, 2024) after fleeing St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s deputies in a stolen Chevrolet Impala and later on foot. The vehicle was reported stolen during a carjacking at 7:30 a.m. Saturday in East Baton Rouge.
A St. John Sheriff’s Office deputy observed the stolen Impala in LaPlace near West Airline Highway and Rue De Sante shortly before 6 p.m. and attempted to make a traffic stop. The deputy observed three people in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle is unknown at this time.
The deputy activated his overhead police lights and sirens. The driver would not pull over and continued driving east on West Airline Highway. Two other patrol deputies joined the pursuit, activating their unit’s sirens and overhead lights as well.
The driver of the stolen vehicle turned north on Highway 51, driving recklessly and weaving in and out of the traffic lanes. The vehicle was observed travelling approximately 80 to 85 mph. The speed limit for that area is 45 mph.
The vehicle slowed and turned onto a field that’s parallel to Highway 51, where it continued north toward Lake Pontchartrain Elementary in LaPlace. The vehicle traveled near the fence line area of the Summerlin Lake subdivision where it was observed hitting a chain link fence and jumping in and out of a ditch, which caused the vehicle to go airborne.
The vehicle continued moving in an open field and crashed into a tree located in the rear of Lake Pontchartrain Elementary. Following the crash, the three occupants got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
One of the occupants, 17 year-old Alvayanna Callahan, was found near one of the school’s building. A second occupant, a 16-year-old female juvenile, was found hiding in the bathroom of a nearby restaurant. The third occupant, 18-year-old Jamal Bradley, was found walking near the intersection of Tuscany and Summerlin Drive.
Bradley and Callahan were booked with illegal possession of stolen things, a felony. Their bond was set at $25,000.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is investigating the carjacking and additional charges could be filed.
