St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Officers visited the Kids On The Move STEM Camp in LaPlace on Thursday, July 11, to share safety tips and insights on a career in law enforcement.

For more than an hour, the officers answered questions, sat and colored in books and chatted with the young campers who ranged in age from 4-to 6-years old. The officers talked with them about stranger-danger, use of 9-1-1 in an emergency and that their job as police officers is to help them and their families and to keep everyone safe.

“We are talking with them about what to do when they see a stranger – to not talk to strangers even if it’s a grown up and they need help,” said Lt. Carolina Pineda. “We are talking with them about their safety, reminding them that when they are on the sidewalk to make sure they look both ways before crossing the street.”

“They asked me, ‘Do you sleep at night?’ I’m like, I get to, but some officers don’t because they are working to keep us safe,” Lt. Pineda said.

Joining Pineda at the camp visit were Lt. Brian Schum, K-9, Milly, Det. Sgt. Demond Memminger, Sgt. Darlene Cooper, Det. Sgt. Caroline Chevez and Deputy Michael Coburn.
