Detective Demond Memminger has been named Officer of the Fourth Quarter for his exceptional response to an accident on I-55. Sheriff Mike Tregre, along with Chris Cancienne, owner of Cypress Physical Therapy, sponsor of the Officer of the Fourth Quarter, recognized Detective Memminger during a staff meeting today at the Lloyd B. Johnson Training Center in LaPlace.
On October 23, 2023, while off duty, Det. Memminger responded to a accident on Interstate 55 between Ruddock and Manchac where there was heavy fog and smoke in the area. As Det. Memminger witnessed several accidents, he decided to stop his vehicle on the shoulder of the interstate, and exit the vehicle to assist victims. With very little visibility due to the smoke and fog, Det. Memminger made his way to a vehicle that had caught fire after a tanker truck carrying a hazardous liquid crashed into the vehicle. When he arrived at the vehicle, he found a woman still in the vehicle with injuries. Det. Memminger worked quickly to free the woman and rescue her from the burning vehicle. Emergency medical services arrived a short time later and transported the woman to a New Orleans hospital where she was treated and released. The EMS personnel reported that if not for Det. Memminger’s quick work, the victim would most likely have died in the burning vehicle.
