On Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at 6:15 pm, St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 600 block of Main Street in LaPlace when a concerned citizen called 911 to report subjects fighting and a firearm was involved. When deputies arrived in the area, they saw a 17-year-old man who told deputies that he was the victim of an armed robbery.

William Russell III

The victim told investigators that he was walking on Main Street and met up with two men who asked him if he wanted to “chill with them”. After accepting, the three men walked to a house in the 600 block of Main Street. When behind the house, one of the perpetrators (the men who asked if he wanted to chill with them) produced a handgun and told the victim to empty his pockets. The victim surrendered $10. A brief struggle ensued, and the perpetrator lost control of the handgun. The victim took the gun from him. The victim’s cousin who was passing the area saw the disturbance. He took the handgun and threw it where the perpetrators would not be able to get to it. No one was injured. They left the area on foot.

Detectives located the two perpetrators at the residence on Main Street and identified them as William Russell III, 19, of LaPlace and a 16-year-old male juvenile from Destrehan. Detectives arrested William Russell III and booked him with armed robbery. Russell remains in custody in lieu of a $50,000 bond. Detectives also arrested the 16-year-old male juvenile and booked him with armed robbery with a firearm. The juvenile remains in custody at the Assumption Parish Juvenile Detention Center. A juvenile detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday in Edgard.
